Things to Do in the Blackwater Valley

Tourist Information

Angling on the Blackwater

The renowned River Blackwater offers endless hours of pleasure to the visiting angler whether accomplished or novice. Rising along the Cork and Kerry border, its clear waters meander for 110km/70 miles in an easterly direction, finally entering the sea at Youghal Bay.

The Blackwater is a noted Salmon Fishery offering impressive Spring, Summer Grilse and Autumn Salmon fishing, predominately for Fly Fishers.

The tributaries of the Blackwater are havens for Trout Fishing, with the River Bride having a run of Sea Trout as well as Brown Trout.

Coarse Fisheries with stocks of Roach and Dace on the Blackwater include Mallow, Fermoy, and down river in Cappoquin. Near Fermoy is Knockanannig Reservoir, an ideal alternative when the River is in flood.

There are three pubs in Ballyhooly where the tourist will always find a welcome. If you take a seat at the counter, the locals will include you in the chat and local news. We would recommend all three as places where you can equally enjoy a pint of Guinness or a cup of tea, whichever you prefer. Live traditional music can by enjoyed in The Rockforest Bar, Castletownroche every Friday night during the summer season.
